The ongoing Test series between India and England has been a topsy-turvy ride for the young India opener, Yashasvi Jaiswal. His outings in the four matches could be summed up in two halves, as the batter has looked outstanding in some innings and has looked vulnerable in other innings. On Day 4 of the Manchester Test, Jaiswal failed to deliver at a crucial juncture and was dismissed for a duck.

In the last four innings on this tour, Jaiswal has looked a bit shaky, and barring a solitary fifty, the England bowlers have found their ways to keep him quiet. While he impressed with a brilliant hundred at Leeds, his form dipped in subsequent matches, particularly after the Edgbaston Test.

Jaiswal's Test performance summed up in two halves

In the first four innings of the ongoing series, Jaiswal showed his flashes of brilliance and took apart the English attack with some sublime stroke-making. He was pivotal in India's win at Edgbaston in the second Test, and the stats tell the complete story.

In the last four innings in England, Jaiswal has looked a pale shadow of his former self and has only accumulated 71 runs, with an average of 17. While his opening partner, KL Rahul, reached new heights, the elegant southpaw continued to struggle as English bowlers found their ways to tackle him.

The tactics England bowlers used to contain Jaiswal

  • The India opener enjoys width on offer, and anything wide of off stump, or down the line, and he is a master of punishing such deliveries. After the first two Tests, England corrected their lines and lengths. For a much larger part of the first four innings, the English bowlers were either too full, or too wide.
  • However, from the Lord's Test onwards, they deployed more specific tactics to challenge Jaiswal. They bowled more straighter, attacking his stumps, and forcing him to play at more deliveries.

  • They have also shortened their length, aiming to make him play more on the front-foot, thus inducing outside-edges. Also, they have engaged in an interesting plan by deliberately engaging in verbal spats with him, just to get under his skin, and forcing him to play false shots.

What Jaiswal can do to counter England?

Attack the ball! Instead of the bowler attacking you, Jaiswal should take the charge and unsettle the English attack. He is at his best when taking on the bowlers, and this is what Jaiswal should do for the final Test.

Perhaps step down the track for a couple of balls, this is what Virender Sehwag used to do to shake opponent's confidence, and Jaiswal can take a leaf out of it.
