Sai Sudharsan failed to make the most of his return to the Indian playing XI in the fourth Test of the ongoing series against England. While the elegant left-hander cracked a composed half-century in the first innings to mark his maiden Test fifty, the cricketer was dismissed for a first-ball duck while attempting to leave a Chris Woakes delivery in the second innings of the Old Trafford Test.
Notably, the manner of Sudharsan’s dismissal evoked memories of the downfall of another Indian left-hander from over a decade ago, when current head coach Gautam Gambhir succumbed to a James Anderson delivery in the first over of the match against England, albeit at The Oval in London.
Golden Ducks, Left Handers And A Full Circle At The Oval & Old Trafford
Back in August 2014 during the fifth Test of India’s five-match tour of England, then opening batter Gautam Gambhir was dismissed for a first-ball duck in the opening over of the match at The Oval in London. Attempting to leave a James Anderson delivery, the left-hander ended up nicking the ball behind towards England wicketkeeper Jos Buttler. India never recovered from the early setback and lost the Test by an innings and 244 runs.
Fast forward to July 2025, and Gambhir witnessed history echo itself from the Old Trafford balcony as Team India’s head coach, as another left-hander, Sai Sudharsan, met a similar fate by feathering an edge while shouldering arms to a seaming delivery, albeit off Chris Woakes.
India Totter Against England In Manchester
Up against a huge first innings deficit of 311 runs against England on Day 4 of the Manchester Test, Team India lost two quick wickets early in the innings without notching up a single run on the board. Shubman Gill at number three eventually conjured a fighting half-century during his partnership with KL Rahul to restore some stability to the Indian innings.
