On Friday, Yashasvi Jaiswal showcased his class in Test cricket as the young opener smacked his 5th Test century and 3rd against the England side. He became the first Indian opener to slam a hundred at Headingley, Leeds as the batter entered the record books with a sensational knock against a top-quality side.
This was an inning of grit and determination as Jaiswal weathered the early England storm and then took them apart with a calculative assault. Apart from becoming the first Indian opener to smack a ton at Headingley, Jaiswal also has the third-most tons in overseas conditions before turning 23.
However, he also etched his name in the history books as he joined some of the best Indian batters in an elite century list.
Indian batters with centuries on their first outing in England
Batter | Runs Scored | Year |
Vijay Manjrekar | 133 | 1952 |
Sandip Patil | 129* | 1982 |
Sourav Ganguly | 131 | 1996 |
Murali Vijay | 146 | 2014 |
Yashasvi Jaiswal | 101 | 2025 |
Vijay Manjrekar was the first one to score a Test century on maiden England outing and he was followed by Sandip Patil in 1982. Former India captain, Sourav Ganguly also makes the cut as the batter hammered a brilliant 131 on his Test debut at Lord's.
India had a disappointing tour of England in 2014 but Murali Vijay was one of the shining lihghts as he smacked 146 on his England debut at Trent Bridge, Nottingham. Now, Jaiswal has entered this elite list with a carefully crafted knock of 101.
Jaiswal chases Tendulkar's record
The young opener continues to prove his mettle in red-ball cricket and he now chases the great Sachin Tendulkar in a huge Test feat. The youngster has 3 overseas Test tons outside Asia before turning 23. The leader of this group is Sachin Tendulkar, who had 7 before turning 24.
The left-handed batter still has the second innings of the Headingley Test and 4 other matches on the tour to get closer to Tendulkar, or possibly even break the record.
