India's former U-19 World Cup captain, Yash Dhull, showcased sheer resilience and determination as he played a lone hand for Delhi in their second Ranji Trophy match of the season against Tamil Nadu. Dhull's inning was not just a cricketing milestone but a remarkable comeback after overcoming a serious health scare earlier this year.
After a successful U19 World Cup campaign in 2022, Yash Dhull was viewed as the next big star in the making of Indian cricket. He made his IPL debut for Delhi Capitals but failed to convert those previous chances. On top of that, fate decided to test Dhull in the hardest way possible.
Yash Dhull makes comeback after heart surgery
Earlier in 2024, Yash Dhull had undergone a medical procedure to address a congenital heart condition after a hole was detected in his heart. He got to know of the existing condition in NCA, Bengaluru, and was advised of immediate surgery. Reflecting on his return to competitive cricket, Dhull revealed that the condition had gone unnoticed since birth and was only identified during a camp at Bengaluru's National Cricket Academy (NCA).
"I got to know [of the issue] during a camp at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru. This is life. Something or the other happens. This was a congenital problem. Normally the surgery happens after birth. Mine has happened very late. That we got to know was very important. Because after the age of 35, this would have harmed. Being back on the field makes me very happy," Dhull told ESPN Cricinfo.
However, despite the seriousness of the issue, Dhull clarified that it was a minor complication, and he was grateful for the opportunity to continue playing. He made the most of his second chance at life and scored a hundred in the second match of the Ranji Trophy between Delhi and Tamil Nadu.
"This was a very important innings for me because this is after surgery. I have seen a lot. When you come back to playing on such a platform and start a new innings, this is good motivation and a positive sign. I got to know it is minor and from birth [congenital]. [But] I am playing at the ground again, this is God's doing. I am blessed," he added.
Dhull's heroics are unlikely to save Delhi
Having said that, despite Yash Dhull's unbeaten 104, Delhi is on the verge of defeat, struggling at 274/8 by the end of Day 3. Notably, Tamil Nadu had posted a mammoth 674, courtesy of Sai Sudharsan's double century and centuries from Washington Sundar and Pradosh Ranjan Paul. While Dhull stood firm, no other Delhi batter managed to cross 40, leaving the home side in a precarious position heading into the final day of the match.
