The ongoing Ranji Trophy 2024 competition has yet to start well for Delhi, who suffered a shocking loss against Puducherry in the opening Elite Group D encounter at Arun Jaitley Stadium.

After the defeat, the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) sacked former Under-19 World Cup winner Yash Dhull as captain, and appointed batter Himmat Singh as the new skipper.

Singh will take over the reins of Delhi's second match against Jammu and Kashmir on January 12, which will also be their first away game this season.

As quoted by PTI, DDCA joint secretary Rajan Manchanda stated that Dhull's removal as leader is because the association wants the youngster to find his lost form back.

We wanted Dhull to do well as a batter - Rajan Manchanda

"Yash is a talented player but is out of form. We wanted him to do well as a batter, that is why we have relieved him of captaincy duties. Himmat is our senior player and has done very well for us. He will captain the side."

Dhull, who helped India win the 2022 U19 WC, became Delhi skipper in December and slammed a hundred on his captaincy debut. Since making his FC debut in February 2022, Dhull has amassed 1,185 runs in 17 matches but suffered a dip in form in Ranji Trophy 2023.

Meanwhile, Singh, 27, has been playing for Delhi for a while, appearing in 22 FC matches and slamming 1,174 runs.

Navdeep Saini and Ishant Sharma won't be available for the J&K contest. Sharma will only play in home games, as per several reports.
