Team India overcame a tough English challenge on a thrilling Day 5 of the series-deciding fifth Test at The Oval in London on Monday, August 4. Defending 374 runs for a win and just 35 on the final day, Indian pace warhorse Mohammed Siraj inspired his team’s spirited fightback by picking up three of the final four English wickets on offer.

After the win, head coach Gautam Gambhir has now heralded a new era for the Indian Test side, emphasizing the importance of team interests instead of individual-centric stats.

Gautam Gambhir Maps India’s Test Future

In a video posted by the BCCI on their social media accounts, Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir can be seen sending out a strong message regarding India’s Test future. The former cricketer said that the ideology of this current team will not be about any individual, but would rather be that about the team itself.

He said:

“It's going to be the ideology of this Test team, where it won't be about individual-centric, it will be about the team.”

Compatible to Gautam Gambhir’s vision, several Team India stars rose to the challenge in the past six weeks against England. Captain Shubman Gill (754 runs), opening batter KL Rahul (532 runs) and all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja (516 runs) all aggregated over 500 runs while blistering wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant listed 479 runs in just seven innings.

Yashasvi Jaiswal also compiled over 400 runs while all-rounder Washington Sundar charted 284 runs while harvesting seven wickets with the ball. Comeback man Karun Nair, meanwhile, struck a fighting half-century under overcast conditions on Day 1 of the series-decider.

Mohammed Siraj (23 wickets), Jasprit Bumrah (14 wickets), Prasidh Krishna (14 wickets) and Akash Deep (13 wickets) all excelled in the pace department.

It is worth noting that the recently-concluded series in England marked India’s first Test assignment since the retirements of legendary batters Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and all-time great all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin.

Under the leadership of new captain Shubman Gill, Team India won the second and fifth Tests, and orchestrated a dramatic draw in Manchester to level the five-match series 2-2.
