While Shubman Gill shared the Player Of The Series award with Harry Brook, the Indian dressing room appreciated the rare gem that Washington Sundar is. The all-rounder who stepped up for the team in need was awarded the Impact Player Of The Series medal by the staff in a dressing room session after the match.
The award session was simple, full of fun, warmth and filled with words of hope and positivity from the head coach Gautam Gambhir as well.
Sundar Gives Warm Speech After Receiving Medal
Washington Sundar, who played four matches in the series barring the first Test at Headingley, shone with scores of 284 with the bat while picking 7 wickets. Sundar also bagged his maiden century in Whites in the Manchester Test.
The all-rounder was warmly awarded by Ravindra Jadeja, who handed him the medal. Picking up the medal, Jadeja said, "Ye le beta..." and approached Sundar to present him the medal, after which he hugged him warmly. After receiving the medal, Sundar shared his thoughts on the series and his performance.
"It's a great blessing to be playing four games on the trot in a place like England. Always wanted to do really well here, and as a team, just the way we went about every single day, it was amazing," Sundar said.
Sundar averaged 47.33 with the bat, scaling even Jaiswal in the series. Meanwhile, with the ball, Sundar bowled 74.1 overs at an economy rate of 3.64. His best figures with the ball came in the Lord's Test, where he boasted 4/22.
Gambhir Fires Up The Team In The Dressing Room
Meanwhile, the medal ceremony was not the only highlight of the dressing room session as head coach Gautam Gambhir also gave a pep talk to fire up the team even after the win in the final Test.
"Congratulations to everyone for winning the game. So remember, we will keep getting better, we will keep working hard, we will keep improving our areas, because if we keep doing that we can dominate Test cricket for a very long period of time," Gambhir said.
With the series in a draw, India morally won the battle on English soil, marking the end of Shubman Gill's first assignment as a skipper. Looking forward, India's next clash will be against the UAE on September 10, marking the beginning of the Asia Cup 2025.
