Team India edged out England by mere six runs on a thrilling Day 5 of the series-deciding fifth Test at The Oval in London on Monday, August 4. Mohammed Siraj delivered the knockout blow to the Englishmen by picking up three wickets on the day to complete five in the innings and nine for the match.
Even though the fifth day started out with odds being heavily stacked against Team India, former captain Sourav Ganguly has claimed that he had the confidence in Shubman Gill’s troops in pulling off a miracle to level the series.
Sourav Ganguly Says Pitch And Pacers Kept India In The Hunt
Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly has claimed that he knew Team India would win the fifth Test at The Oval. While speaking with the reporters, Ganguly said that he predicted the result after the conclusion of Day 4 itself, since Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna were bowling “outstandingly well”.
The cricketer-turned-administrator also stated that the pitch remained good for bowling on Day 5 to give India an edge towards the closing stages. He said:
“When the game on Day 4 finished, I had confidence that India was going to win. The pitch was good, and Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna bowled outstandingly well.”
England finished Day 4 at a commanding 339-6 to find themselves just 35 runs away from victory with four wickets in hand. However, Indian fast bowlers Akash Deep, Prasidh Krishna and Mohammed Siraj picked up the crucial wickets of both centurions Joe Root and Harry Brook, as well as that of Jacob Bethell to tilt the tide slightly in India’s favour by stumps.
On Day 5, Siraj mopped up the English tail to bag sensational figures of 5-104. Krishna also cleaned up Josh Tongue with a peach to claim figures of 4-126 as England lost their final seven wickets for just 66 runs to get bundled out for 367.
