Shakib Al Hasan is arguably the greatest cricketer Bangladesh has ever produced. He has won them plenty of games across formats, and has been the poster boy of Bangladesh cricket for quite a long time. However, the man is now at the twilight of his career, and the political situation in Bangladesh has created more problems for him.
Bangladesh is going through a bit of political turmoil at the moment after massive protests emerge to remove Sheikh Hasina-led Awami government. Shakib Al Hasan was part of the same party, so there has been growing anger over his stance on the politicial situation in the country for a long time. There has been massive protests against him and he was not able to play a Test match against South Africa because of the backlash from general public.
Shakib Al Hasan Not In A Mental State To Play International Cricket
So, it has brought his future with Bangladesh cricket in doubt and has not been selected in the ODI squad for the West Indies series. It is their last series in the format before Champions Trophy, and the Bangladesh Cricket Board president Faruque Ahmed has now opened up on the problem with Shakib Al Hasan. The president added that he cannot provide a definitive answer on Shakib's participation and it depends on law enforcement agencies and court.
"As for Shakib Al Hasan, I cannot provide a definitive answer. I want him to play, but his absence is not related to the cricket board. The reasons preventing his participation involve law enforcement and the court. It's not easy for me to address this."
He was hopeful that if the issue regarding law and order is resolved, Shakib can still play for the country. Faruque, however, mentioned that there is difference between playing in franchise leagues and national team and revealed that Shakib is currently not in the mental state to play at the international level.
"If the issue is resolved, I still believe Shakib has the ability to play for the national team. However, playing in franchise leagues abroad and playing for the national team are not the same. The national team requires a certain combination, and Shakib doesn't seem to be in the mental state to contribute at that level right now. We've left this decision to him."
Shakib Al Hasan last played an ODI for Bangladesh in the 2023 World Cup, while he last played an international game in September 2024 against India.
