Ajinkya Rahane, the veteran Indian batter is all set to take over the captaincy duties for Kolkata Knight Riders in the 2025 edition of the Indian Premier League according to a report from Times of India (TOI). The Indian cricketer was bought for 1.5 Crore in IPL 2025 mega auction and, as KKR search for a captaincy option after the departure of Shreyas Iyer, the Mumbai star has emerged as a front-runner to take over the leadership role due to his experience and success as a captain in the past.

A source has informed TOI that it is more or less confirmed that Rahane would captain KKR in IPL 2025 and his purchase in the auction was majorly keeping in mind his leadership skills.

Ajinkya Rahane's Experience As Captain To Help KKR

Ajinkya Rahane is currently leading Mumbai in domestic cricket and though he is not their Syed Mushtaq Ali skipper, he has been pretty successful in other tournaments. Also, Rahane has led India in the past and it was under him that India won the 2020-21 BGT. Also, he has led Rajasthan Royals in IPL and so has experience of handling teams and management in the league and could be a suitable candidate to handle pressure of a high-profile franchise.

Kolkata Knight Riders won the 2024 IPL under the leadership of Shreyas Iyer, but they did not retain him and he has now moved to Punjab Kings. The other captaincy option for KKR is Venkatesh Iyer, who was bought for 23.75 Crore, but Rahane is a more experienced and accomplished leader and the franchise is likely to bet on him for the upcoming season.

Rahane has earlier played for Kolkata Knight Riders in the 2022 season. He could muster just 133 runs in seven matches at that time, but did quite well for CSK in the next two years which has once again increased his stock in the shortest format.
