In a major setback for all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan, BCB president Faruque Ahmed confirmed on Thursday that Shakib will not be included in Bangladesh’s squad for the upcoming ODI series against Afghanistan due to lack of practice and fitness issues. Earlier, the veteran was denied his farewell Test due to security issues in Mirpur.
Shakib Al Hasan has been at loggerheads with the Bangladesh Cricket Board ever since the leadership underwent a transition in the aftermath of political instability. The all-rounder insisted on bidding farewell to his Test career at his home ground in Mirpur. However, due to security issues, Shakib was disallowed from playing the first Test against South Africa in Mirpur. His supporters lodged a protest, which further strained the cricketer’s relationship with the board.
Shakib Al Hasan snubbed for Afghanistan tour
In a latest development, Shakib Al Hasan is set to be excluded from the ODI squad for the upcoming three-game series against Afghanistan scheduled at UAE. A day after Shakib expressed uncertainty over his future in the 50-over format, BCB president Faruque Ahmed put the rumours to rest.
The Daily Star revealed that Ahmed spoke to reporters on Thursday and confirmed that Shakib Al Hasan will miss the ODI series against Afghanistan due to lack of match practice. Not only that, the president claimed that it was Shakib’s personal call to sit out of the series, contrary to the previous claims of lack of communication made by the veteran.
As for the all-format tour to the West Indies, Faruque Ahmed clarified that Shakib Al Hasan will be considered for selection if he proves his fitness to the board officials. That tour will begin from November 22, starting from the 2-game Test series.
BCB denies providing security to Shakib
Shakib Al Hasan is under serious threat after being accused of assault during the student protest. A case has been registered against him in Bangladesh with enraged anti-students threatening to intensify their protest against Shakib. Since then, the all-rounder has avoided stepping foot in Bangladesh, and recently, BCB denied taking responsibility for his security. The board said that security has to come from the government, and the cricket board is not liable for such services.
