England batter Harry Brook has received the backing of former batter Mark Butcher with respect to pulling out of the forthcoming 18th season of the Indian Premier League. Brook, whose lone IPL season had come for Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2023, is the first player to skip IPL 2025.
In spite of being a potential trump card for Delhi Capitals, Brook has now withdrawn for the second time in as many years. Coincidently, the 26-year-old player was bought by DC on both occasions. While Brook missed out on earning INR 4 crore last year, even INR 6.25 crore weren’t enough to keep him lured to the cash-rich league.
Mark Butcher Hails Harry Brook’s Decision
Speaking on Wisden Cricket Weekly, Butcher considered Brook’s decision to prioritize international cricket as “career-defining”. Highly likely to be announced as England’s limited-overs captain, Brook turning up for his country at the expense of the aforementioned amount will earn him massive respect from their fans, believes Butcher.
“This could be a career-defining, I think it's a team-defining or a project-defining summer for England and [head coach Brendon] McCullum and [Managing Director Rob] Key and [Test captain Ben] Stokes. So, therefore, I think he's made the right call. And he will make a lot of money playing for England,” Butcher said.
Brook, an all-format England cricketer, is currently on a three-year deal with ECB (England Cricket Board). Apart from Brook, only former captain Joe Root and fast bowler Mark Wood had committed to three-year central contracts in 2023. For the unversed, the top value of England’s multi-year central contracts hovers around £800,000 (INR 9 crore approximately).
Mark Butcher Defends IPL’s New Rule
Butcher, 52, was also considerate enough to understand IPL’s new rule around overseas players ruling themselves out days or weeks before a season. As per the same, Brook, who participated in the auction but has pulled-out without a medical reason, wouldn’t be allowed to play the next two seasons.
“Even if he ends up pulling a two-year ban because they've changed the rules and got sick of players signing up through the auction process and then pulling out on the eve of the tournament, which is absolutely their right to do - I don't blame them for that whatsoever, the age that he is he's got a lot of IPLs in him,” Butcher added.
It is to be noted that Brook’s 94 appearances at the highest level are the most for an English player since his debut. Regarded as a generational talent, Brook is critical to England’s chances during a summer season which involves a five-match Test series against India before an away Ashes series towards the end of the year.
As Butcher said, assuming Brook delivers all that is expected out of him, his comeback to the biggest T20 league in the world wouldn’t be surprising in the future.
