After criticising his decision-making and underpar performances during the ICC World Cup 2023, Mohammad Amir became an unexpected voice of support in favour of outgoing Pakistan skipper Babar Azam as he stepped down from his leadership post.

Babar relinquished captaincy across formats amidst heaps of extensive scrutiny and doubts over his fate at the helm of affairs following Pakistan's disappointing pre-semifinal exit from the marquee tournament in India.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) promptly announced fresh Test and T20I skippers in Shan Masood and Shaheen Afridi, respectively, leading Babar into a new phase of his rising young career where the modern-day giant hopes to elevate his batting standards and become the prodigious world-beater at the international stage.

Amir expressed his views along the same lines and encouraged the growing right-hander to embrace this phase with open-mindedness and focus on taking the next step in his quest to achieve world cricket dominance and greatness.

Amir supports Babar Azam's move to quit captaincy

Speaking on Pakistan-based 'ARY News', the former left-arm pacer, who has played together for Karachi Kings with Babar in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), echoed his stance in favour of Babar shedding the extra load off his shoulders and perhaps using it as a springboard for higher success with bat in hand.

"This is my advice to Babar [Azam] that he should take this thing [leaving captaincy] as a challenge. He has nothing to prove as a player," Amir said. "[Virat] Kohli got to know through social media that he was removed from the captaincy."

Fellow expert and discarded spin allrounder Imad Wasim concurred with Amir's views and went to the extent of hailing Babar's move as "great" , one that could spur him on to unprecedented heights as the dependable linchpin to Pakistan's all-format batting unit.

"I think Babar Azam's decision is great. He can now [entirely] focus on his batting without the extra pressure of captaincy. There is so much pressure [of captaincy]," Wasim said before wishing Masood and Shaheen the best for their respective captaincy stints.
