The former BCCI president and Indian captain, Sourav Ganguly opens up on the exclusion of Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyers from the annual contract, which was announced by the governing body of Indian cricket- BCCI, yesterday in the evening.

While there have been many new additions to the contract list, a few players have been removed as well despite being an integral part of the team for the last few years, Iyer and Kishan being the two of them. Their exclusion has surprised the whole cricketing fraternity but Sourav Ganguly has his say on the same.

Ganguly, who was a part of the BCCI's panel for a while knows how things accommodate for the BCCI and its players. In his recent interview, on being asked about Kishan and Iyer not being included in the contract list for the season 2023-24, Ganguly expressed that BCCI wanted them to play competitive cricket, but they didn't despite being fully fit.

Here's what Sourav Ganguly responded to Iyer and Kishan's exclusion:

"I think the BCCI wants them to play first-class cricket. I am surprised why Shreyas Iyer has not played Ranji Trophy. It is a premier tournament and you are supposed to play. So it is a decision by BCCI and what they have thought right they have done. Every contracted cricketer must play first class cricket because that is the basic premise of cricket in this country."

Sourav Ganguly clearly stated that both Iyer and Kishan were supposed to play first class cricket but they chose not to and the result is right in front of everyone that they have been dropped from the central contracts. Ishan Kishan opted out of the South Africa tour and decided not to play Ranji Trophy which also surprised Sourav Ganguly.

"Shreyas Iyer is playing the semi-final for Mumbai in a couple of days' time. Yes, they are young players and Ishan has surprised me. He was part of the Indian team in all formats. Such a big contract in IPL. I don't know why he has done that. You must play when you are as gifted as Ishan Kishan. When you are playing for India in all formats, you must play. I was surprised by his decision not to."

Kishan has finally made a comeback on the field by featuring in the ongoing 18th DY Patil T20 Tournament and is gearing up for the upcoming season of the IPL.
