Shreyas Iyer after the injury (Source: AFP)
Star player Shreyas Iyer is reportedly recovering well after suffering a spleen laceration and rib injury during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney. After the serious injury, Iyer was initially kept in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at St. Vincent’s Private Hospital. He has now been shifted to a private room and could soon be discharged, according to multiple reports.
Shreyas Iyer recovering faster than expected
According to an exclusive report by The Times of India, the injury could have been dangerous if not treated in time. Recently taking to TOI, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia spoke about Iyer's injury and his current situation.
"Shreyas is much, much, much better. His recovery has been much faster than what the doctor expected. I'm in regular touch with Dr Rizwan (Khan, Indian team doctor who stayed back with Iyer to assist with his treatment at the Sydney hospital). Normally, he should take six to eight weeks (to recover completely), but you can expect a surprise from him because he may recover much earlier," BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said.
"The doctors are very satisfied with his progress. He has started his normal functioning (routine chores). His injury was very severe, but he has recovered and is out of danger, which is why he was shifted from the ICU to his room in the hospital yesterday," he added.
BCCI arranges family support
As per TOI’s latest update, the BCCI is making arrangements to fly Shreyas Iyer’s sister, Shresta, to Sydney to be by his side during his recovery. Reports also mentioned that Iyer is in good spirits "He’s talking, smiling, and already joking with the nurses." He has also started eating solid food, walking around and receiving phone calls.
It is important to note that while the 30-year-old has made remarkable progress, medical experts have advised him to take it slow. It may take six to eight weeks before he returns to full fitness, though an early discharge could happen within days.
