After veteran pacer Mohammed Shami’s recent remarks questioning selection communication, another India bowler, Shardul Thakur, has issued a reminder to selectors and Ajit Agarkar about his intentions for the future. The Mumbai pacer, who is currently leading his state in the Ranji Trophy, said he still dreams of making a comeback in India’s ODI setup, with the 2027 ODI World Cup firmly in his sights.
Shardul Thakur Targets ODI Comeback Ahead of 2027 World Cup
Speaking to reporters during Ranji Trophy fixture, the ace pacer revealed that his focus is on consistent performances at the domestic level to force his way back into the team and make a comeback in International cricket. The 32-year-old also admitted he is eyeing the No. 8 bowling all-rounder’s role.
It is also important to mention that taking a look at the current ODI setup of Team India, the 'Men in Blue' have two options for that spot that is - Harshit Rana and Nitish Kumar Reddy.
It would not be wrong to say that if Shardul is aiming for that place he will face tough competition from Harshit Rana, as he enjoys the confidence of head coach Gautam Gambhir and management.
'What is important for me is to keep playing matches and perform. To get back into the Indian team, I also need to keep having those good, match-winning performances, which is eventually going to help in the selection. The ODI World Cup is also in South Africa, so there might be a place open for a bowling all-rounder at No. 8. I am eyeing that spot." said Thakur
Despite being out of white-ball contention, Shardul also mentioned that he is prepared for any opportunity at the international level.
"Whenever the Indian team needs me or whenever I am selected, I am ready to play international cricket. My preparation is such that if tomorrow I am asked to play international cricket, I am ready," he said.
Shardul Thakur made a brief return to Test cricket earlier this year during India’s tour of England but was not included in the home Test series against the West Indies. Taking a look at the overall stats, the pacer has played for India in 13 Tests, 47 ODIS and 25 T20Is.
