On Day 2 of the match, Smith came to bat at number four after William Salzmann scored a solid 65 off 85 balls. From the moment he arrived, Smith looked confident and focused. He patiently built his innings and soon began finding the gaps with ease. His calm yet attacking style showed that he’s using this domestic match as serious preparation for the Ashes.
Notably, Smith reached his century after facing 158 balls, completing the milestone with a single to long-on off Tom Straker in the 83rd over. This marked his 52nd first-class hundred.
When it comes to the Ashes, Smith’s record speaks for itself. In 37 matches, he has scored 3,417 runs at an average of 56.01, including 12 centuries and 13 half-centuries. These numbers prove just how consistent and dependable he has been for Australia in the biggest rivalry.
Meanwhile, this century comes at an important time for Smith, as he has been appointed captain for the Ashes opener following Pat Cummins’ absence due to a back injury.
Smith eventually got out for 118 runs off 176 balls, an innings decorated with 20 fours and one six. By the time he walked off, he had done more than enough to put his team in a strong position.
At the end of the day’s play, New South Wales stood at 323 runs for 4 wickets in 91 overs.
