Former Indian cricketer Sourav Ganguly faced massive backlash after he called the brutal rape and murder case of a resident doctor in Kolkata a ‘one-off incident.’ However, Ganguly came forward to clarify his stance and demand stricter punishment for the culprits.

A female resident doctor of R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital was gang-raped and brutally killed last week while she was resting in a seminar hall after her 36-hour shift.

The barbaric incident led to widespread protests over the country as the pressing issue of women’s safety at workplaces was put in the spotlight. The protests and public outrage prompted the Calcutta High Court to transfer the case to the CBI.

Meanwhile, former Indian cricketer and BCCI president Sourav Ganguly, received backlash for his comments on the horrifying incident. He labelled it as a ‘one-off’ incident which does not reflect on the overall safety standards of the state of West Bengal.

"I told that last Sunday, I don't know how it was construed or was interpreted. I have said it earlier also, it's a terrible thing," Ganguly told PTI.

However, after criticism, Ganguly clarified his stance and claimed that his comments were taken out of context. He strongly condemned the shameful incident and urged the CBI to conduct a thorough investigation and strictly punish the perpetrators.

"Now CBI, police are investigating the matter. Its very shameful what has happened. I hope that CBI, who are investigating the matter, once they find the culprit strict punishment should be given. The punishment should be such that no one dares to commit such crime again in their life. That is important. Punishment has to be severe," he added.

Sourav Ganguly added that the nature of punishment should be extreme, that it sets an example and instils fear so that no one even thinks about committing such a barbaric crime ever again.
