India’s experienced middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer is committed to ending his hiatus from Team India as he gears up to prove himself in red-ball cricket and mark a return to the Test team in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia. As he told Hindustan Times, facing Australia is the ultimate litmus test, and he enjoys the pressure and thrill of the BGT series.

Shreyas Iyer’s relations with BCCI turned sour when he neglected domestic cricket and allegedly lied about his injury. He was dropped from the central contract list and has been out of the senior Test team ever since.

Shreyas Iyer eager to play BGT series vs Australia

In a bid to force a comeback, Iyer scored a couple of fifties in the Duleep Trophy before converting it to 142 against Maharashtra in the ongoing Ranji Trophy. And with that ton, Iyer is dreaming of a comeback to the national Test side.

As quoted by Hindustan Times, Shreyas Iyer revealed that there is no greater challenge than facing Australia, and as a cricketer, the intense rivalry, thrill, and pressure associated with the series is what he craves. Hence, ahead of the big tour, Iyer’s goal is to grab every opportunity that comes his way and leave a mark.

"I am living the dream of representing India in every single format that I had as a child. Playing in Australia, especially in a Border-Gavaskar series, is one of the biggest challenges in cricket. The conditions, the rivalry, and the intensity demand everything from you, and these are the moments you want to be part of as a cricketer. I’m preparing myself to grab that opportunity and leave a mark,” he said.

Shreyas Iyer also acknowledged the competition in the playing XI, noting that India, as a nation, is a powerhouse of talent and hence competition is inevitable. However, that won’t change his aspiration of a comeback as he prepared himself to be ready to perform whenever an opportunity arises.

"The competition for places in Indian cricket at the moment is greater than ever before because of the sheer amount of talent that exists in India. There are now a lot more avenues as well for the players to make an impression and make their mark and catch the eyes of the selectors. You have to make an impact every single time you’re on the pitch that is what I aspire to do. When I get the chance, I will be ready to make an impact because performing at the highest level for India is what it’s all about," he added.

Iyer hits back at injury rumours

Ahead of Mumbai’s next Ranji Trophy game against Tripura, rumours suggested that Shreyas Iyer will be dropped from the playing XI due to a shoulder injury. The news caught flare and was shared extensively on social media. However, Iyer reprimanded media houses and urged them to do their homework before sharing such unconfirmed news as he is not injured and completely fit to play against Tripura.
