Mehidy Hasan dismissed on 97 against South Africa in Dhaka Test (@BCBtigers/X.com)
Bangladesh’s emerging all-rounder, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, played an anchoring knock of 97 off 191 balls to keep his team safe from an innings loss against South Africa in the Mirpur Test. Despite missing out on his hundred by just 3 runs, Cricbuzz reported that Hasan was least bothered about his personal achievement as the team’s loss pinched him more.
Bangladesh cricket team suffered a rare loss at home as South Africa beat them by 7 wickets in the first Test held at Mirpur. The hosts batted first only to collapse to 106. Later, the visitors earned a 202-run lead in the second inning and the pressure forced errors from the Bangladeshi batters.
Mehidy Hasan reflects on his gritty knock vs South Africa
From 112/6, the Bangla Tigers were on the brink of a shambolic inning defeat before Mehidy Hasan Miraz initiated a rescue effort with Jaker Ali. He spent time in the middle and was dismissed just 3 runs short of his hundred on 97. However, his partnership with Jaker allowed Bangladesh to fetch a 106-run lead which unfortunately proved to be not good enough.
Having said that, as quoted by Cricbuzz, Mehidy Hasan revealed that he wasn’t playing for his 100 as the idea was to bat as deep as possible and take the team in a winning position. Sadly, he couldn’t execute that plan which will definitely hurt. He said:
"It always feels bad to miss a century and I am also feeling bad, but more than the century, if I could've executed the plan, it would have felt much better. I was not thinking about the century all I was thinking about was how far I could take the team. I always try to enjoy tough situations. I don't overthink. I just think that if I play well here, there's a chance to become a hero."
Additionally, Mehidy Hasan also opened up on comparisons with veteran Shakib Al Hasan noting that the latter cannot be replaced and his achievements are far more significant. He also voiced support for Shakib who is going through a crisis in his personal life. He added:
"You are always saying that I am playing in place of Shakib bhai. Shakib bhai contributed significantly to Bangladesh and he is a legendary player. I have been scoring runs for the last two years. Shakib bhai has his place and I am in my place, and it is better if you don't compare one player with another player because we all know about Shakib bhai's achievement."
South Africa moves up in the WTC table
South Africa won a crucial Test against Bangladesh in unfamiliar subcontinent conditions and reaped the rewards of their commendable team effort. With that win, the Proteas improved their rating in the World Test Championship (WTC) points table and moved to fourth place, behind India, Australia, and Sri Lanka.
On the other hand, Bangladesh slipped to seventh place after their third straight loss in the red ball format. They will surely need a miracle in the upcoming Chattogram Test to shake up the table once again.
