Former Pakistani legendary cricketer Inzamam-ul-Haq has slammed Mohammad Hafeez for questioning the legacy of 90’s players. He opined that Pakistan cricket is nothing with 90s-era players as they achieved a lot during their era.

The controversy began after Pakistan's early exit from the 2025 Champions Trophy, where they lost to New Zealand and India before a washed-out game against Bangladesh sealed their fate.

Hafeez pointed out that while Pakistan had legendary players in the 1990s, they failed to win ICC tournaments after the 1992 World Cup, citing defeats in 1996, 1999, and 2003.

Inzamam-ul-Haq Schools Hafeez, Backs 90s Players

Former legend Inzamam-ul-Haq, however, strongly dismissed Hafeez’s claims. He opined that without 90s-era players, there’s nothing left to celebrate in Pakistan’s cricket history.

"If we remove the ’90s cricketers from Pakistan cricket, there won’t be much left. Whatever we won after the ’90s was also achieved by players from that era. We won the ’92 World Cup, and its captain and key performers were all from the ’90s," Inzamam said.

He added that while he didn’t listen to Hafeez’s comment on TV, he advised him to refrain from making such statements and respect former cricketers who have served the nation.

“No one should make such statements. I didn’t hear the remarks live, so I don’t know the exact context. However, everyone knows the contributions of the 90s cricketers," he added.

Following criticism, Hafeez clarified on social media that he never meant to disrespect any player, but only highlighted the lack of ICC trophies in that era. He reiterated that his statement was about team performances rather than individual cricketers.

Waqar Younis Fires Back At Hafeez For Disrespecting Pakistan’s Cricket Legends

Mohammad Hafeez questioning the legacy of 1990s cricket stars, claiming they failed to leave a lasting impact due to their inability to win ICC titles post-1992 hasn’t sat down well with former cricketers.

While Hafeez didn’t take names, many believe he was referring to Pakistan’s legendary bowling duo Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis.

Meanwhile, Waqar shut down the criticism with a brutal statistical flex. Through social media, Waqar highlighted the combined 1,705 wickets in 191 Tests and 618 ODIs between him and Akram, which included 66 five-wicket-hauls and 10 ten-wicket-match hauls.
