Rajasthan Royals crashed to their third successive defeat this IPL 2024 season, this time at the hands of defending champions CSK at Chennai on May 12. After hobbling their way to 141 runs upfront with the bat, Sanju Samson and co. failed to restrict the hosts later in the run-chase.

After the match, captain Samson hailed CSK’s fast bowler Simarjeet Singh for unleashing an astonishing match-winning spell, and also praised his bowlers for taking the game to the 18th over.

Sanju Samon speaks about team debriefing after defeat

Sanju Samson claimed that his batters were aiming for a 170-run total after he won the toss and opted to bat first. He admitted falling 20-25 runs short of their desired total and hailed CSK fast bowler Simarjeet Singh for jolting Rajasthan Royals’ top-order at the Chepauk Stadium.

While speaking during the post-match presentation ceremony, Samson said:

“Right after the powerplay, the message was that the wicket was a bit slow, perhaps a bit two-paced, and the bounce wasn't as expected. While I was batting in the middle after the powerplay, we were aiming for a score of around 170. However, to be honest, we fell short by about 20-25 runs. They seemed to understand the conditions better than us, and the youngster, the Paaji (Simarjeet Singh), bowled exceptionally well.”

Sanju Samson also added that he expected the wicket to slow down but CSK’s calculated batting in the run-chase proved too much to handle for the Rajasthan Royals in the run-chase.

“I expected the wicket to slow down, but credit to them, they also batted well. Extending the game to the 18th over was commendable. While it's natural to consider qualification in this tournament, our team meetings emphasize focusing on what we can control. In the debrief, I'd like to remind my teammates to concentrate on our controllables."

Despite the defeat, Rajasthan Royals continue to occupy the number two position on the IPL 2024 points table. Under the leadership of Sanju Samson, they will now face Punjab Kings in match number 65 of the tournament on May 15 at Guwahati.
