Sean Williams has retired from T20I cricket. According to a recent report, the Zimbabwe all-rounder made the decision after his team secured a consolation win over Bangladesh at Mirpur on May 12. The 37-year-old will continue to represent his nation in Tests and ODI matches.

As confirmed by Cricbuzz, Sean Williams decided to retire from T20Is on May 12 and informed his teammates about his decision after Zimbabwe’s eight-wicket win over Bangladesh at Mirpur’s Sher-e Bangla National Stadium.

Despite Zimbabwe’s emphatic win in the fifth T20I, hosts Bangladesh ended up sealing the series by a 4-1 margin.

Sean Williams featured in just the first and the last match of the series, and was not required to bat in his final appearance owing to clinical run-chase efforts from opener Brian Bennett and captain Sikandar Raza. Overall, the star all-rounder received 81 T20I caps for his country, amounting to 1,691 runs at an average of 23.48.

Apart from the 11 half-centuries he tallied in his career, one of Williams’ most influential T20I knock remains the match-winning 31 he scored against Pakistan at the 2022 T20 World Cup in Perth. The cricketer also harvested 48 wickets in the format through his crafty left-arm orthodox spin.

Notably, Williams was one of the members of Zimbabwe’s first-ever T20I playing XI back in November 2006, when a Prosper Utseya-led team faced Bangladesh at Khulna.

The Zimbabwe cricket team, meanwhile, will now host India for their subsequent T20I challenge in July, i.e., shortly after the conclusion of the 2024 T20 World Cup in the West Indies and the USA.
