In a historic feat, Afghanistan advanced to their first-ever semifinal in an ICC event by defeating Bangladesh by 8 runs via the DLS method in a low-scoring thriller during the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024 on June 25, 2024.

After winning the toss, Afghanistan's captain Rashid Khan chose to bat first on a slow, sluggish pitch. The team managed to score 115 for 5 in their allotted 20 overs.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz top-scored with a patient 43 off 55 balls, while Rashid Khan contributed a crucial unbeaten 19 off 10 balls at the end.

Rashid Khan Special Message For Brian Lara

Rashid Khan after winning the historic match opined that he believes that this win is like a dream and he also credited Brian Lara, who supported and backed them earlier at the start of the tournament.

"Well, it's something like a dream for us as a team. The belief came when we beat New Zealand. I don't have words to describe my feelings. Everyone back home is happy. The only person that put us in the semi-final was Brian Lara. When I met him, I told him that we won't let him down. Super happy to make it to the semi-finals.

The Afghanistan captain also stated that this is a massive victory for the team and the country will be proud of this historic win.

It's a massive celebration back home. It's a big achievement for us as well. We reached the semi-finals at the under-19. The country will be very proud of. I'm so happy in how our team has delivered as a team. Butt we have to go with a clear plan in the semi-finals. Enjoy the win tonight."

Bangladesh needed to chase the target in 12.1 overs to progress to the next stage but faced early setbacks. Litton Das held one end and scored an unbeaten 54 off 49 balls.

Despite his efforts, Bangladesh's chase faltered as wickets fell regularly, and there was minimal support from other batsmen.

Intermittent showers reduced the match, and Bangladesh's target was revised to 114 in 19 overs. Rashid Khan excelled with the ball, taking 4 for 23, while Naveen-ul-Haq sealed the win with 4 for 26 in the penultimate over, which concluded the rain-affected match and ensured Afghanistan's spot in the semifinals.
