'Not With India, But If IPL Presents Me...' - Virender Sehwag Opens Up On Head Coach Role

One of India's most destructive batters, Virender Sehwag, opened up about his coming plans related to cricket. The 45-year-old, who previously worked as a mentor for Punjab Kings, did not use any filter while giving his opinion, as he used to do the same with the bat in hand in the past.

Virender Sehwag Ready To Take IPL Head Coach Role

In a recent interview with Amar Ujala, Sehwag revealed he would love to take the head coach's responsibility, but not as India's. Instead, he would love to take the leadership of any IPL franchise.

In addition, Sehwag also explained why exactly he would prefer an IPL gig at this moment rather than India's head coach job, which his partner-in-crime Gautam Gambhir recently took over. He said:

"Not with the Indian cricket team, but if the IPL presents me with a coaching opportunity, I can surely have a look at it. If I become India head coach, then I'll have to return to the same routine which I went through for 15 years. Playing for the Indian team requires you to stay on the road 8-9 months a year. My kids are 14 and 16, and they need me. Both play cricket for Delhi. One is an opening batter and the other an off-spinner. I need to help them with cricket and spend time."

"If I become the India head coach, staying away from them would be my biggest challenge. I will not be able to give time to my children. But yes, if there is a coach or mentor role available in the IPL, I can take it up."

Sehwag Speaks About Gambhir As India's Head Coach

To conclude, Sehwag opined there won't be much of a challenge for Gambhir at Team India. Further on, he also cited the reason behind his statement.

"I don't think it's a challenging role because there are other professionals involved too. The team recently won the T20 World Cup; players know their roles. With Gambhir coming in, players will have clarity. So that will be an added advantage."

"The challenges will be less for Gambhir and more for players, since now they would feel that after the T20 World Cup, they have to win the Champions Trophy, or the WTC final or the World Cup. But of course, Gambhir is around to help them all," pointed out Sehwag."

Now, with Rahul Dravid all set to become the new head coach of Rajasthan Royals, it would be interesting to see whether any franchise offers the similar job to Sehwag before IPL 2025 mega auction.
