'Not Saying This With Disrespect': Sourav Ganguly's Blunt Response On Pakistan's Woeful Test Form

The year 2024 has been dismal for the Pakistan cricket team. They started the year with a heavy defeat against Australia in Sydney, followed by an embarrassing group stage exit from the T20 World Cup.

Pakistan don't have match-winners: Ganguly

The side was further humiliated in the recently concluded Test series against Bangladesh, which they lost 2-0. This was Pakistan's first series defeat against the Tigers and it dented their chances of qualifying for the WTC finals.

The team is suffering from internal turmoil, with reports of rift between senior players circulating almost everyday. On Monday, former India captain, Sourav Ganguly gave his blunt take on Pakistan's woeful 2024 form.

He urged the stakeholders to have a closer look at what's happening within the team. Ganguly stated that earlier Pakistan used to have big match players, but that is not the case anymore.

"I see a genuine dearth of talent in the country. Every time we think of Pakistan, we remember Miandad, Wasim, Waqar, Saeed Anwar, Mohammad Yousuf, and Younis Khan."

"That's the memory of Pakistan for us, but that doesn't win matches in the modern generation of cricket. Every generation has to produce outstanding players to win, and when I look at Pakistan in world cricket -- I saw them in the West Indies World Cup, in India during the World Cup, and now after the Bangladesh series loss -- there is a dearth of talent in that country."

"The people connected with the sport in Pakistan will have to look into it. I'm not saying this with disrespect. Pakistan of the old had some great cricketers, which I don't see in this squad," Ganguly said.

Pakistan slip to No.8 in Test rankings

Pakistan appointed Shan Masood as their new captain in November 2023, and since then, Pakistan have been on a downward curve. They are yet to win a single Test match, and have been humiliated by Australia, followed by Bangladesh.

The team under Shan Masood crashed out of the WTC finale race and have slipped to number 8 in the latest ICC ranking. They have a chance to resurrect themselves in the upcoming Test series against England, starting next month.
