Team India defeated South Africa by seven wickets in the second Test at Cape Town, drawing the two-match Test series. Additionally, this marks the first time an Asian team has triumphed over South Africa in Cape Town in the longest version of the game.
The Cape Town encounter between India and South Africa concluded in a mere 107 overs (642 balls), establishing itself as the shortest Test match in history.
The hosts batted twice on the first day of the game after winning the toss. Not just this, on the first day of the game itself, a total of 23 wickets fell. And another 10 perished on Day 2 before India chased down a 79-run target to clinch their first-ever Test win at the venue.
Speaking at the post-match press conference following the Test win, Rohit Sharma, the Indian captain, expressed his satisfaction with the team's strong resurgence and the way they played after the embarrassing loss in Centurion.
Here’s what Rohit Sharma said:
“In Centurion, we had to learn from our mistakes. We came back very well, especially our bowlers. Had some plans and the boys got rewarded. We applied ourselves, we batted well to get a 100-run lead, not pleasing to see the last six wickets. We knew that it's going to be a short game, we knew every run matters, to get that lead was very important.”
Rohit Sharma further lauded his fast bowlers, particularly praising Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah, both of whom picked up six-wicket hauls. While Mohammed Siraj achieved this feat in the first South Africa innings, Jasprit Bumrah accomplished it in the second innings.
“Very special, something you don't get to see very often. We spoke about keeping things simple and that's what happened. The pitch did the rest. Lot of credit to Siraj, Bumrah, Mukesh and Prasidh. Whenever you come here, it's challenging.”
Although Team India secured a series draw, the elusive dream of winning a series in South Africa persists for them.
