Team India crashed Dean Elgar’s farewell party by defeating South Africa inside the afternoon session on Day 2 at Cape Town to level their two-match series 1-1.

Jasprit Bumrah’s six-fer keeps SA lead to 78

Jasprit Bumrah had overnight batter David Bedingham caught behind within the opening over of the day to pick up his second wicket of the innings. The speedster also removed Kyle Verreynne, Marco Jansen and Keshav Maharaj later in the same spell to add three more wickets to his tally, as South Africa slumped to 111-7 inside the first hour of the morning session.

Aiden Markram, at the other end, remained defiant as the 29-year-old extended South Africa’s lead past the 50-run mark through belligerent ball-striking while batting with the tail. The Proteas opener leathered Prasidh Krishna with two boundaries and two sixes in a single over, before picking successive boundaries off Bumrah to race to a run-a-ball century.

Markram’s defiance was eventually curtailed by India’s first-innings hero Mohammed Siraj, who picked up his seventh wicket of the match. Krishna dismissed Kagiso Rabada, while Bumrah had Lungi Ngidi’s number to finish his spell with figures of 6-61 from 13.5 overs. South Africa added 114 runs in the session before getting folded up for 176, thus setting up a 79-run target for the visiting Indians.

Jaiswal, Rohit Sharma overhaul target with ease

Out-of-form Yashasvi Jaiswal bludgeoned series-nemesis Kagiso Rabada with a barrage of boundaries upfront to race to a 23-ball 28 at the top. Shubman Gill (10) and Virat Kohli (12) failed to take India past the finishing line as the two cricketers were trapped by Kagiso Rabada and Marco Jansen respectively.

Rohit Sharma remained unbeaten at 17 while Shreyas Iyer delivered the knockout punch as Team India sealed the deal by seven wickets in just 12 overs.
