Cape Town India’s pretty gloomy record continues at Cape Town and they still have to wait to create history to register their first-ever Test win at this venue. Indian cricketers have never found Cape Town as its greatest hunting grounds, and despite some standout individual performances, their collective show has left a lot to be desired. Take a look at the top 5 Indian batters with the most runs at this historic venue. 

These knocks have shown their ability to adapt to the conditions and to provide a strong fight against the potent South African bowling attack. 

Sachin Tendulkar - 489 runs 

The 'Master Blaster' Sachin Tendulkar holds the record for scoring the most runs by an Indian in Cape Town. Tendulkar played four Tests at Newlands, smashing 489 runs across 7 innings. The ‘God of Cricket’ played his first Test at this venue way back in 1993, where he scored 73 in India's only innings.

Sachin played one of the best innings of all time in South Africa, let alone Cape Town, as his astonishing 169 helped India avoid the follow-on. This inning also gives him the record for the highest individual score by an Indian in the Rainbow Nation. A decade later, Tendulkar hit his second fifty in Cape Town, but couldn't prevent a loss. His stunning innings of 146 in 2011 was also his final Test century. Sachin is the only Indian to score two test hundreds at this historic venue. 

 Sourav Ganguly-165 runs

 Sourav Ganguly, popularly known as the ‘Prince of Calcutta’, ‘or ‘Dada’, is undoubtedly one of the best batsmen and captains in Indian cricket history.Taking a look at Ganguly’s career we cannot skip the century he made at Lord’s, in 1996, in his first Test match against England at Lord’s, Saurav scored a masterly century.Ganguly’s jersey wave has since become a familiar talking point in cricketing circles.Not only did Ganguly master all aspects of cricket, he has also been a supporter of his fellow players, both on and off the pitch. He groomed Harbhajan Singh and Virender Sehwag.Former Indian captain and outstanding Test batsman Sourav Ganguly has scored 165 runs from the two matches that he played at Cape Town with an average of 41.25.

Gautam Gambhir -157 runs

Gautam Gambhir was at his gritty best best during the Test Match against the Proteas.Gambhir in the first innings suffered a left elbow injury while making 93 and looked in distress when he was struck by Morkel just below the injured elbow in the second over of the second innings.He received treatment on the field before carrying on batting with no further obvious signs of discomfort.

Delhi batsman innings stood out because of the fact that he batted with injured hand and hit to the elbow while batting just to help the team to secure a draw. This was one of the most memorable and special knocks from Gautam Gambhir in this match-saving 64 against South Africa at Cape Town during India’s 2010/11 tour to the country.The Indians were chasing a target of 340 runs on day 5 of the series decider, the team was pegged back early with Virender Sehwag falling cheaply.Gambhir dropped anchor and batted through pain for more than four hours to score 64 off 184 deliveries.  

Virat Kohli - 141 runs

Virat Kohli, the Chase Master, has scored 141 runs in 4 innings with one half-century in the two Tests Matches at the Newlands Cricket Ground in South Africa.Kohli played a gritty knock of 79 runs in 201 balls in Cape Town in January 2022. His rest three scores at this venue are all below 30. In the 2022 Cape Town Test, Rabada and Ngidi dismissed him. In the New Year Test against South Africa Virat Kohli failed to score his 31st Test Fifty as the star Indian batter was dismissed after playing a fighting 46-run knock.

Virat Kohli now has more Test runs than the former Pakistan captains Inzamam-ul-Haq and Javed Miandad combined. Virat, 35, surpassed the legendary VVS Laxman in the first Test against South Africa in Centurion to become India’s fourth-highest run scorer in Tests.

Only Indian wicketkeeper with a century in Capetown. Rishabh Pant scored 127 runs for India at the Newlands Cricket Ground in Cape Town including an outstanding century. India’s wicket-keeper batter, slammed a defiant century in India’s second innings on day 3 of the third Test against South Africa in Cape Town. The innings typically proved Pant’s style of aggressive bating as he launched a counter-attack against South African bowling. 

The fall of two quick wickets of the veteran batters Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane, Pant came to bat took his time to get going. Rishabh, before playing his shots tested the African bowlers with his good technique and patience.Once Kohli was dismissed and wickets started falling around him, Pant knew he had to press on the accelerator to collect important runs for his team.He did just that and took India’s lead past the 200-run mark on route to reaching his fourth century in Test Cricket.
