Former India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni to date remains a mystery for many, despite being in the public eye for more than 15 years.

Dhoni, who retired from international cricket in 2020, still is one of the most cherished players in Indian cricket, and fans flock in numbers to catch a glimpse of the wicketkeeper-batter during the Indian Premier League (IPL) for Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

Former India pacer Zaheer Khan, who played under Dhoni's captaincy with great success, has opened up about the latter's interests outside of cricket.

As quoted by JioCinema, Zaheer, who picked the most wickets for India in the 2011 World Cup, explained that Dhoni understood long ago that cricket is not everything in life and that switching on and off is important.

'But it couldn't be everything' - Zaheer Khan

"When you're playing, switching off (from the game) is very important. Cricket is not everything. Every cricketer has to face this eventually. When you step away from the game, you may not have a lot of options. We've seen many athletes struggle after retiring because they gave everything to the game, and when they left it, they didn't know what to do."

"In this sense, MS Dhoni understood a long time ago that he is passionate about cricket and it is an integral part of his life. But it couldn't be everything. He keeps doing things outside of the sport. For example, his interest in bikes. He's always researching them."

Dhoni, 42, will most likely play his final IPL season this year, when CSK defend their record-equalling fifth title. CSK's opening match will be against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on Friday at Chepauk.
