The historic MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai is getting ready for the ultimate face-off between defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the opening game of the IPL 2024, starting March 22.

As MS Dhoni's winning brigade sets up for a riveting clash against Faf du Plessis' men to kickstart the annual T20 carnival, the refurbished Chepauk Stadium was seen lit up under lights late in the night on Tuesday (March 19) before the two teams lock horns in another mouthwatering tussle in their great rivalry.

Notably, CSK's Bengaluru counterparts, including modern-day legend Virat Kohli, reached Chennai at midnight on Wednesday (March 20) with huge crowd reception and media turnout at the airport before they get down to business with an opening-day encounter.

While CSK's rivalry with the joint-most successful franchise Mumbai Indians (MI) is much celebrated, Dhoni army's on-field engagements with the Bangalore-based rivals has also been a point of huge attraction for the fans towards the toughest T20 league.

RCB have contested 31 matches in IPL's 16-year-old run against Chennai and won 11 while losing 20 of the high-octane games, including the final of the 2010 edition of the IPL played in Chennai.

CSK have maintained a wood over RCB but Du Plessis' men would believe they have the talent to upstage the mighty hosts.

The opening game will also witness the returns of the two teams' legendary figures Dhoni and Kohli from their respective breaks.

While Dhoni makes a comeback after a year since lifting the IPL 2023 trophy upon winning the final against Gujarat Titans (GT), Kohli ends his paternity leave after skipping the recent England Test series due to the birth of his second child
