Mumbai Indians (MI) dethroning their mighty successful captain Rohit Sharma from captaincy ahead of the 17th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has been a topic of debate and controversy, especially as the franchise appointed comeback all-rounder Hardik Pandya as his leadership replacement.

Passionate fans of the experienced Indian opener and Mumbai franchise felt aggrieved when their heroic captain was thrown off the pedestal and removed from the helm in favour of Pandya, who returns to MI following a two-year successful captaincy stint with Gujarat Titans (GT).

When asked about the much-publicised swap, head coach Mark Boucher insisted the team's welfare and future goals attained a priority behind the management's decision as they wanted to allow Pandya to rebuild an in-transition side while freeing up extra responsibility on an ageing Rohit's shoulders.

A section of the media, however, continues to claim a rift between Rohit and the MI team management and ownership group acting as a cause behind the recent captaincy change. An Indian journalist went to the extent of saying Rohit is now an "Elephant in the room" for the Mumbai franchise, one they want to get rid of.

In a clip going viral on social media, a journalist claimed Rohit is being treated as a problematic figure by skipper Pandya and coach Boucher as he stands between their succession plans for the team ahead of next year's mega auction before IPL 2025.

For Rohit, the IPL 2024 is thus an important one to prove his indispensability for the Mumbai side as a specialist cricketer and opening batter, who hasn't been in the best of touch in the league over the past 2-3 seasons. The 36-year-old will have to make amends with the bat and show why remains a match-winner on his day for the side.
