MS Dhoni is one of the finest captains ever to play the game and led India with great distinction in all three formats. He started his Test captaincy journey with great success and under his leadership, India became the number 1 team in the Test rankings. However, in the later half of his Test captaincy tenure, India lost quite a few matches.
He also evolved as a Test cricketer in his career and it has always been interesting to hear his views about the purest format. Now, in an event in Goa, MS Dhoni has opened up on the nature of Test cricket during his time and how he sees the changing approach in the format.
MS Dhoni Backs Aggressive Approach In Test Cricket
As quoted by ESPNCricinfo, MS Dhoni said that the most difficult time for him as a Test cricketer was when he knew that the match will end in a draw on the final day, but he still had to keep wickets for 2.5 sessions. He added that everyone just goes through the motions in such situations and it is not good for the game and he is happy with how the team are approaching Test cricket nowadays.
"For me, the most difficult time during a Test match was the fifth day of a match which is the last day when you knew that 100 per cent it is going to be a draw. I would still need to keep for nearly 2.5 sessions and that was the most tiring part. You see there is no result happening, you are just going through the motions. Yes, bowlers would like to take wickets, batters will try to score runs, [but] there is no result in the game. You think let's finish this and go, why do I have to be here. So I love the fact there is change in the way teams are playing Test cricket."
The former Indian skipper added that having draws is also not good for the promotion of the game and to generate interest among new audiences. He added that getting more results would improve the experience of Test cricket and draw can be detrimental to the development of the game.
"Imagine telling someone who does not know much cricket we play over five days and we start at 9.30 and 4.30 is the scheduled end of play, we play till 5 [pm] sometimes, and after five days we do not get a result. That is not nice for the game. So I love how there is more results in today's world. Even if we are playing only four days of cricket and one day gets washed out, still you get a result - that is the beauty of Test cricket and that is how it should stay - you want to get a result after five days and you should not have a draw."
India recently grabbed headlines for their aggressive approach in the Kanpur Test against Bangladesh. However, the approach backfired against New Zealand, and so it remains to be seen how India go about their business in the longest format in the near future.
