During the first day of the second Test of the ongoing South Africa’s tour of Bangladesh in Chattogram, South Africa stand-in captain Aiden Markram (33) gifted his wicket away after a solid start. Thereby, presenting a chance to former Bangladesh captain Mominul Haque to increase his lead in list of the most successful fielders in the history of Bangladesh Test cricket.
In the middle of a commanding 69-run opening partnership alongside Tony de Zorzi, Markram lost his patience on the first ball of the 17th over to play a lofted shot off Bangladesh spinner Taijul Islam.
Mominul Haque's stellar catching record
Having failed to achieve optimum execution, all Markram managed was to hit the ball towards Haque at mid-on. Bangladesh’s safest fielder in the format, the 33-year old player didn’t err to give his team a much-needed breakthrough.
Currently playing his 67th Test match, Haque grabbing his 40th catch allowed him to increase the lead against all-rounders Mahmudullah (38) and Mehidy Hasan Miraz (38). With the former a retired international cricketer now, a narrow difference between Haque and Miraz will see them competing with each other every time they take the field.
Apart from age being on his side, Miraz completing 38 catches in 49 Tests further speaks highly of his contribution across all the three departments in this format. If he continues at this rate, expect him to finish his career as Bangladesh's most successful fielder in Test cricket.
Most catches by a non Bangladeshi fielder
Catches | Player |
---|---|
40 | Mominul Haque |
38 | Mahmudullah |
38 | Mehidy Hasan Miraz |
30 | Imrul Kayes |
29 | Shakib Al Hasan |
If all the three formats of international cricket are considered, Mahmudullah is the best Bangladeshi fielder by a distance as he tops the list in ODIs (81) and T20Is (51) as well.
