In a ruffling instance highlighting the perils of modern technology, former Indian cricketer, Sachin Tendulkar’s daughter, Sara has become the latest victim of deepfake technology misuse.

Sara Tendulkar highlighted deepfake menace in online spaces

Addressing her followers through an Instagram story, she expressed her dismay over the emergence of fabricated images of herself on Twitter, a platform on which she confirmed she holds no account.

Sara Tendulkar highlighted the concerning trend of technological abuse, particularly the creation of deepfake images that distort the essence of truth and authenticity on the internet. She revealed her discovery of several such images, which she categorically dismissed as far from reality.

The 26-year-old attributed these fabrications to impersonators on Twitter and called upon the platform's authorities to take stringent action against such accounts. Stressing the importance of maintaining truth in entertainment, she called for creating a digital environment rooted in trust and authenticity.

"Social media is a wonderful space for all of us to share our joys, sorrows, and daily activities. However, it is disconcerting to see the misuse of technology as it takes away from the truth and authenticity of the internet. I have come across some deepfake photos of me which are far from reality. A few accounts on X (formerly Twitter) have obviously been created with the intent to impersonate me and mislead people. I do not have an account on X, and I hope X looks into such accounts and suspends them. Entertainment should never come at the expense of the truth. Let's encourage communication that's based on trust and reality," wrote Sara Tendulkar.

It is worth mentioning that this distressing incident has once again brought to light the broader challenge faced by public figures in the age of advanced technology and social media. Bollywood actor Rashmika Mandanna also recently became a target of deepfake manipulation.

The ordeal faced by Sara Tendulkar has brought to the forefront the urgent need for ethical practices in the use of emerging technologies, especially in how they intersect with the lives of individuals in the public eye.
