Rohit Sharma, India's talismanic skipper who led the Men in Blue to the World Cup final in an inspired campaign, is unlikely to take any further part in T20Is for India. According to the report from PTI, the BCCI source revealed that Rohit Sharma discussed his future about the shortest format of the game, before the start of the 50-over World Cup, and is likely to concentrate on ODI and Test cricket to prolong the last phase of his cricketing career.

Rohit Sharma has not played any T20Is for India since the 2022 T20 World Cup where India lost the semifinal against England. Since then, there were speculations that seniors like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Ravindra Jadeja and Mohammed Shami will no longer take part in the shortest format for India, as Men in Blue aim to refabricate their brand of T20 cricket.

Rohit Sharma has played 148 T20Is and has scored 3853 runs with a strike rate of nearly 140. He has smashed four centuries as well, and with the kind of form, Hitman displayed in the World Cup 2023, India will surely miss his big-hitting antics at the top of the order. Rohit Sharma smashed 597 runs in the World Cup and was by-far the most impactful batter in the tournament with his selfless attitude.

In the absence of Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya has regularly led the Indian T20I side in recent times, but he too has been laid low by an ankle injury now, and it remains to be seen what the future holds for India in the shortest format of the game.

As a short-term measure, India went with Suryakumar Yadav as the captain for the T20I series against Australia. However, Jasprit Bumrah is most likely to take the leadership role, if both Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya are unavailable for the T20 World Cup 2024 to be played in the Caribbean and U.S.A.
