The Lucknow Super Giants have raised eyebrows with their expensive purchase of Australian cricketer Josh Inglis for INR 8.4 crore. The signing is considered unusual because of the recent turmoil created by the availability of the cricketer, given his commitment issues for the tournament due to his upcoming marriage.
Former South African superstar AB de Villiers strongly criticised the move. On his YouTube channel, he called it the "craziest signing I have ever seen in my life."
ABD thinks Conway, Bairstow were better than Inglis
Speaking on the YouTube channel, Ab de Villiers, who has been an IPL veteran himself, while playing for RCB for a decade, was shocked at such a high bid for the player.
"Josh Inglis, this is the craziest signing I have ever seen in my life. He is only going to be available for four matches. LSG sign him for 8.6 crores. I don't know, is he really worth that much? Then you look at guys who were unsold like Jonny Bairstow, Devon Conway, all of them would be available for the entire season and possibly a better signing for LSG," de Villiers said.
For the unaware, Josh Inglis went unsold in the first round of the auction, and it was only in Phase 1 of the Accelerated auction that he saw franchises fight for him with the paddle.
The potential with Josh Inglis
If his availability was not a concern, Inglis is a solid player at No. 3 who flexed his potential with the Punjab Kings last season. He scored 278 runs from his 11 matches while averaging 30.88. At 3 in the IPL, Inglis averages 36.00 at a strike rate of 181.51.
Meanwhile, the Lucknow Super Giants now have a remaining purse of Rs 4.55 crore. The team is looking to improve after a seventh-place finish last season, where they won six and lost eight matches. They are one of only three franchises yet to win an IPL title and look forward to it with the services of Inglis.
