As India gear up for a tough five-match Test series against England next month, one big question remains, who will be the new Test captain? Meanwhile, former Indian Test cricketer Abhinav Mukund has picked Jasprit Bumrah over Shubman Gill, citing the pacer’s previous experience in leading India in whites.

With Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli both retiring from red-ball cricket, Team India is without two of its most experienced leaders. Now, all eyes are on the BCCI, which is expected to announce the squad and new captain soon.

Before the official word comes in, cricket analysts and fans have narrowed down two names, Shubman Gill and Jasprit Bumrah

Abhinav Mukund Picks Bumrah As India’s Ideal Test Captain

Former India opener Abhinav Mukund has suggested Jasprit Bumrah as the right choice to lead the side. He said the team will be travelling without any seniors and needs an experienced leader by their side to guide them amid a challenging series against England.

“Bumrah (should lead) because he has already led India before, and we need the experience in England,” Mukund told SportsBoom.com.

Previously, Bumrah led India in the first and last Tests of the Border-Gavaskar series held in 2024-25. Under his leadership, the team won their first and only Test of the tour in Perth.

However, as per several rumours, Shubman Gill is leading the race to succeed Rohit Sharma. Bumrah’s recurring back injury has forced BCCI to prioritise his workload management. Playing 5 long Tests in English conditions could be tough on his body, and managing his workload will be key.

India To Announce Next Test Captain On This Date

The BCCI will reveal India's Test squad for the England tour and its new captain on May 24 at 12 PM IST via a press conference. With Rohit Sharma retiring from red-ball cricket, Shubman Gill is reportedly the frontrunner to lead the team.

Jasprit Bumrah was considered, but concerns over his fitness have reportedly kept him out of the leadership race. Rishabh Pant is also likely in the race to assume the role of vice captain.
