With Indian cricket legends Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma retiring from Test cricket, all eyes are on who will step up for the upcoming England tour. The official squad is expected to be announced on May 24 for the five-match series beginning in June, but some key details are already emerging.

Shubman Gill To Lead Team India In Tests

Shubman Gill, the young Gujarat Titans captain in the IPL, is widely expected to lead the Indian Test team. According to Cricbuzz, Gill will likely take over the captaincy for the series in England. At just 25, the Punjab batter has already served as vice-captain in ODIs and is now ready to lead in the longest format.

Despite talks about other senior players like Rishabh Pant and Jasprit Bumrah, the squad is set to remain mostly the same as the one that toured Australia last year - minus Kohli and Sharma. However, some fresh faces are likely to get a chance.

Karun Nair and Sudharsan In Contention

Karun Nair and Sai Sudharsan, who both had strong domestic and IPL seasons, are expected to make the cut. Nair has been impressive in the Ranji Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy, scoring big consistently. He is currently with the India A squad heading to England and may join the senior team as well.

Sudharsan, 23, has had a breakout IPL season, scoring 638 runs. Though he has been a successful opening partner with Gill in the IPL, he likely won’t open in England. Instead, KL Rahul has reportedly been told he will open the innings alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal, pushing Gill to bat at No. 4. This could leave the No. 3 spot open for someone like Sudharsan or Nair.

Notably, injured pacer Mohammed Shami will likely miss out, but India bowling attack remains strong with Bumrah, Siraj, and others. The squad will also include all-rounders like Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar, with Rishabh Pant and Dhruv Jurel as wicketkeepers.

The likely squad will include:

Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Karun Nair, Sai Sudharsan, Sarfaraz Khan, Ravindra Jadeja, Washington Sundar, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Rishabh Pant, Dhruv Jurel, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Harshit Rana, Shardul Thakur and Kuldeep Yadav
