English cricketer, Harry Brook has been banned for two years from participating in the IPL after he pulled out of the 2025 season. Meanwhile, his peers Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid have backed BCCI, stating the punishment wasn’t harsh.
Harry Brook has been handed a two-year ban from the IPL after pulling out of the 2025 season at the last moment.
The BCCI introduced a new rule preventing players from entering the IPL auction for two years if they withdraw without a valid reason. And Brook’s decision to skip IPL for the second consecutive year led to this action.
England Cricketers Back Harry Brook’s Ban From IPL
Meanwhile, former England all-rounder Moeen Ali has defended the BCCI’s decision, calling it fair. Speaking on the “Beard Before Cricket” podcast, Moeen explained how such last-minute withdrawals disrupt teams’ plans.
“It’s not harsh. I kind of agree with it, in a way, because a lot of people do that. I mean, it’s messed his team up, obviously, by pulling out. A lot of people have done it in the past, and then they come back in and they end up getting a better financial package, or whatever it is. And he kind of messes a lot of things up as well at the same time. Any team that loses Harry Brook is messed up a bit, and they’ve got to now rejig everything and stuff like that.
Brook was bought by Delhi Capitals for INR 6.25 crore in the 2025 auction after previously being acquired by Sunrisers Hyderabad for INR 4 crore in 2024.
But just like last year, he withdrew, citing national commitments, leaving DC scrambling for a replacement.
Adil Rashid Goes All Out Against Harry Brook
England leg-spinner Adil Rashid also backed Moeen’s views, stating that Brook was aware of the rule before entering the auction and hence, the punishment made sense.
“So when you put your name in, you know if you pull out, this is going to happen. So you know the consequences of it. So I don’t think it’s harsh. No, but if you pull out and you have, like you say, an injury or whatever, then I think that’s where something like the rules may differ or change in that way."
BCCI hasn’t done anything against the law and it's Brook’s fault that he pulled out of the IPL, despite being fully aware of the consequences.
