Venkatesh Iyer’s IPL 2025 season was underwhelming, full of pressure, challenges, and valuable lessons. Acquired by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at a record ₹23.75 crore during the mega auction, Iyer had a mediocre season and was criticised for not living up to his value.
The left-handed all-rounder scored a mere 142 runs in 7 innings in IPL 2025 without any impactful or match-winning innings. KKR, as a result, dropped to 8th in the points table and fell out of the playoff race.
Venkatesh Iyer Unfazed By Price Tag Criticism
It goes without saying that being a ₹23.75 crore worth player, expectations are always huge. The same was true for Venkatesh Iyer, who succumbed under pressure. But Iyer remained unfazed.
In a chat with Sportskeeda, he made it clear that outside opinions don’t matter to him, as he is only answerable to the franchise and to the people who make a difference in his life.
"People who had these questions are not even on my contact list. So why do I have to even think about what they are thinking? It’s my life, my game, my career. And it’s my team that has chosen to spend so much on me. So these things don’t phase me. People who have had a direct impact on my life, I am answerable to only them," Iyer said.
Though he admitted that playing under such scrutiny was tough, he sees the experience as a learning curve.
"I think it’s important not to look back because, if you think about it too much, it will add a little bit of negativity. Yeah I have taken the learnings, taken the positives, and whatever mistakes happened. But yeah, there were a lot of things that have come up that I feel hindered my performance. But all in all, good one or bad one, winning the trophy or not winning it, scoring 600-700 runs, that and all is different," he added.
KKR To Trade Venkatesh Iyer In 2026?
That being said, having an underwhelming season comes with its own set of consequences. In the aftermath of the IPL 2025 season fallout, KKR sacked coach Chandrakant Pandit, who was believed to be the mastermind behind Iyer’s auction bid.
"I have got absolutely no clue [on trade rumours]. There has been nothing at all from the KKR management also."
If rumours are to be true, Venkatesh Iyer could be traded for the right package ahead of the IPL 2026 season. Though the all-rounder denied such speculations.
