In a massive setback for Australia, Matthew Short, Mitchell Owen and Lance Morris have been ruled out of the remainder of the ongoing white-ball series against South Africa at home. While Owen has been sidelined from the remaining games due to a concussion injury, Short and Morris will miss the high-voltage series due to a side injury and back soreness, respectively.
Australia Lose 3 Key Players Due To Injury
It's worth mentioning that Mitch Owen showed delayed symptoms of concussion after getting hit by a pacy delivery from Kagiso Rabada right on the grill of his helmet during the second T20I in Darwin. As per Cricket Australia's concussion protocols, Owen is out of action for twelve days.
On the other hand, Matthew Short was released from the squad after failing to recover completely from the injury that he sustained while training on the West Indies tour.
Short has had several injury setbacks of late. The spin-bowling all-rounder was ruled out midway through the Champions Trophy due to a side injury and hasn't played for Australia ever since.
Talking about Lance Morris, the young fast bowler was picked only for the ODI leg. However, soreness in his lower back forced Australia to sideline him from the series. Short and Morris have been advised to rest ahead of the home summer.
Left-arm spinner Matthew Kuhnemann and all-rounder Aaron Hardie have been added to the ODI squad as replacements. The ODI series will also witness the return of Marnus Labuschagne and Xavier Bartlett, two players who aren't participating in the T20Is.
The decider of the three-match T20I series will be played on August 16, with both teams facing each other in the first ODI at Cazaly's Stadium in Cairns on the 19th of the month.
