India’s selectors are expected to announce the Asia Cup 2025 squad next week, and all eyes are on Shubman Gill. The young opener, who recently led India in Tests, is reportedly in contention for a leadership role in the T20I side for the upcoming tournament in the UAE.

Gill’s stocks have risen sharply in recent months. His phenomenal performance against England in Tests, scoring a staggering 754 runs, further established him to be India's most dependable batters.

Shubman Gill Likely To Be Vice-Captain In Asia Cup

In T20 cricket, Shubman Gill had a strong IPL season as captain of the Gujarat Titans, showing consistency and composure at the top of the order. Now, with his form peaking, there is growing talk that he could once again be given the vice-captaincy in the shortest format.

According to PTI, Gill will be given a leadership role in the 2025 Asia Cup, most likely as vice-captain and deputy to captain Suryakumar Yadav. This wouldn’t be the first time Gill has been trusted with leadership responsibilities.

When Suryakumar Yadav first became T20I captain during the Sri Lanka tour last year, Gill was his deputy. However, in India’s last home T20I series, it was Axar Patel who served as vice-captain.

This creates an interesting selection dilemma, but given Gill’s recent meteoric rise, vast captaincy experience and future plans, the 25-year-old will likely win the vice-captain race.

Where Does Gill Fit In The Batting Order?

While Shubman Gill is running for the vice-captaincy role for the Asia Cup 2025, a big question mark remains over his batting position. Reports suggest the selectors are likely to retain the settled top five that has worked well under Suryakumar, Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, and Hardik Pandya.

Gill, who previously played as an opener, no.3 and no.4 batter in white-ball formats, does not fit into the top order at all. This sets up a big challenge for the selection committee.

The Asia Cup begins on September 10, with India facing the UAE in their opener, followed by the much-anticipated clash against Pakistan on September 14.
