Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) fell 110 runs behind Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in Delhi to bow out of the IPL 2025 season on a disappointing note. The outcome ensured KKR finished the season at number eight on the points table to cap one of the worst title-defence campaigns for any team in IPL history.

Venkatesh Iyer, who fetched a lucrative Rs.23.75 crore deal for the KKR at the IPL 2025 mega auction, yielded underwhelming returns for the franchise, aggregating just 142 runs in seven innings of the tournament at a below-par average of 20.28.

Venkatesh Iyer pens note as KKR release looms large

On Tuesday, May 27, KKR batter Venkatesh Iyer took to his Instagram account and shared an emotional note for fans of the franchise. Addressing KKR’s disappointing title-defence campaign in IPL 2025, the 30-year-old vowed of a stronger comeback even at a time when several fans are asking for his removal from the team ahead of next IPL season.

Venkatesh Iyer wrote:

“Hard season. Big hearts. Lessons we’ll carry forever.”

Venkatesh Iyer’s repeated underwhelming performances led to his ouster from the playing XI in KKR’s final three matches of the IPL 2025 season. In the 11 games he played in the tournament, the left-handed batter registered 142 runs in seven innings at a strike rate of 139.21.

Moreover, Venkatesh bludgeoned 60 of those runs in a single game against SRH back on April 3 at the Eden Gardens, doing so in a match-winning cause for the KKR.

Amid his struggles, the 30-year-old did receive some backing in the form of his KKR captain and star Indian batter Ajinkya Rahane. The senior Indian cricketer extended his support for Venkatesh, claiming that the struggling batter maintained his “focus on the controllable things” this season.
