'If He Grows As...' - GT Coach On How Gill Can Be A Better IPL Captain Than Hardik Pandya

It's the dawn of the new era for Gujarat Titans (GT) as rising young batter Shubman Gill takes up the leadership mantle from Hardik Pandya for IPL 2024, and franchise's head coach Ashish Nehra is aware his job will only be tougher as he needs to guide Gill for an unprecedented job in the man's career.

Never having captained Punjab, India U-19s, or India A, the 24-year-old elegant opener has suddenly been entrusted with the captaincy responsibilities of an IPL team that lifted the trophy in its first season in 2022 and finished runners-up last summer.

Nehra recognises Gill will be judged on the standards that Pandya had set for the franchise before unexpectedly leaving to forge a controversial return to the Mumbai Indians (MI), who have appointed him their new skipper.

Nehra Wants Gill To Grow As Person And Leader

The former India left-arm pacer is thus willing to put in extra effort in his off-field inputs and guidance, acknowledging how challenging it will be for Gill to rally everyone together and ensure Titans remain one of the stiffest competitors in the marquee T20 league

"Very excited to see how Gill operates. The whole of India, not only me. He is that kind of player. He is someone who is looking to play and looking to do well in all three formats," Nehra was quoted as saying by ESPN Cricinfo.

"So we as a franchise, as a support staff, are really excited to help him grow as a person more than as a captain. If he grows as a person, then he will definitely be a better captain going forward," he added.

The Titans start off their campaign next Sunday (March 24) against Mumbai in Ahmedabad.
