Ben Stokes is set to make his return to competitive cricket through England’s upcoming home Tests against Zimbabwe and India. The 33-year-old last played a match back in December 2024 in Hamilton before a left hamstring injury ruled him out of action for a while.
Ahead of the one-off Test against Zimbabwe and the series against India, Stokes has said that he is confident of resuming his all-round duties for England, and cited his work ethics on his way to attaining full recovery.
Ben Stokes confident of full-fledged return
While speaking to Sky Sports, Ben Stokes stated that he is eager to get back into the field as a full-fledged all-rounder for England. The legendary English cricketer added that he has made successful returns from injuries before, and is confident of replicating his past exploits. Stokes said:
“In terms of my role as a player, that full seamer, batting at six, trying to dominate every situation I find myself, whether I've got a bat or ball in my hand, is what I want to get back doing out on the field, on the biggest stage. I know I've done it before, it's something I've very confident in myself I can do.”
Ben Stokes also added that his philosophy is to get “back fitter” every time he returns from an injury. Ahead of England’s home international season, he said:
“I always work hard. My ethos when I'm injured is I come back fitter than I was before I got injured. I've worked incredibly hard on all aspects of everything, from my cricket to fitness, and know I'm going to be in a position when I am back on the field to potentially be in physically the best possible shape I have been in.”
Under the leadership of Ben Stokes, England will host Zimbabwe in a one-off four-day Test match in Trent Bridge between May 22 and May 25.
The match will be followed by England's 5-match Test series Vs India from June 20 onwards in Leeds. The series will also launch the 2025-27 WTC cycle for both sides.
