Former BCCI President Sourav Ganguly has opened up on his decision to replace Virat Kohli with Rohit Sharma as the captain of the Indian men's cricket team.

Following Virat Kohli's resignation from Test and T20I captaincy in 2022, Rohit Sharma was appointed as the new Indian captain, with Sourav Ganguly serving as the BCCI chief amidst rumours of tension between him and Kohli.

Ganguly had previously revealed that the BCCI approached Kohli to rethink his decision to resign as T20I captain, but the latter countered by stating he hadn't been contacted by the BCCI president or anyone else regarding a change of heart.

While naming Rohit Sharma as captain of the Indian cricket team, Ganguly emphasised Rohit's immense potential, citing his remarkable success as captain of the Mumbai Indians, leading them to five IPL titles.

Here’s what Ganguly said

“Look at the way he captained in the World Cup. Taking India to the final. I think India was the best team in the competition till they lost the final. So he is a good captain, IPL trophies. I am not surprised by the way he led," Ganguly told RevSportz.

“He became the captain when I was the BCCI president, and I am not surprised by the way he has led the team. I made him the Indian captain because I saw the talent in him, and I am not surprised by what he has done," he added.

Rohit Sharma has just guided India to their 17th consecutive Test series victory at home. Despite a defeat in the series opener against England in Hyderabad, India has now surged ahead to an unassailable 3-1 lead, with the final match set to be played in Dharamsala from March 7.

Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma has been dethroned as the captain of Mumbai Indians for the upcoming India Premier League (IPL) 2024 season, with Hardik Pandya stepping into the leadership role. All eyes will be on how the Mumbai batting stalwart will fare in the upcoming season.
