On Wednesday, June 19, former England captain Michael Vaughan opened up on his mental health and revealed that he was not able to perform basic functions due to stress.

In an interview with the Telegraph, Vaughan opened up on his mental health issues and stated that due to extreme stress, he could not even lift a microphone when he was on commentary duties in the boxing day match last year.

Tough times started for Vaughan when his former Yorkshire team-mate Azeem Rafiq alleged him of hurling racial slurs toward him during their stint at the county club in 2009.

In the latest events, Vaughan, took to Twitter to reveal that because of the stress he incured from that incident, one fine morning last year, he struggled to get out of bed and tie his shoes.

The 49-year-old added that he underwent tests and an MRI which revealed that he had an stress-induced inflammatory illness.

"Today I have spoken about the stress-related illness have been been fighting for 9 months. I don’t want sympathy as I was lucky enough to see a specialist early to give me the best medication. If this helps one person it's been worth it. “I’ll be honest with you, I was never going to speak about it. But then I thought, ‘Wait a minute, there are probably quite a few people who go through similar and stay silent’. I don’t want this to appear as if I’m after any sympathy, because I’m not. I just hope I can help one or two people,” he explained.

Vaughan, further added that he would have shot himself dead if he would have faced this situation at the age of 80. The former England skipper urged people to visit a doctor early on like he did and added that he took two heavy steroid injections in his knee and his back to better his condition.

“Don’t ever think you can’t get treated for something or you can’t get through it. And if you do have the signs of some inflammatory disorder, go to your doctor as soon as possible.” he urged fans.

It must be noted that Vaughan was cleared of any charges last year.
