‘He’s Going To Face Challenges’ - Gujarat Titans Coach Bold Remarks on Shubman Gill

Gujarat Titans, a team that made its debut in the Indian Premier League back in 2022, had two stellar seasons consecutively. They won the IPL 2022 title under the leadership of Hardik Pandya and made it to the final of the 2023 season, where they eventually lost to the Chennai Super Kings. 

However, just before the IPL 2024 season kicked off, they got hit hard when their captain, Hardik Pandya, moved to his old team, the Mumbai Indians, in a big-money deal, leaving the Gujarat Titans in the fresh hands of Shubman Gill.  

Now that Hardik is at the helm of the Mumbai Indians, all eyes will be on Gill to see how smoothly he fills the gap left by the Indian all-rounder. According to the franchise's batting coach Gary Kirsten, the support team is fully committed to assisting Gill in his new leadership role.  

“I think the leadership is going to be an important role for him and I know he's really keen to do the job and we, as coaches, just need to assist him in making sure he's getting the best out of his players, and he's leading the team appropriately and in the way we want him to lead," Kirsten said, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.  

While Gill may be inexperienced as a captain, he's hailed as the 'next sensation' in Indian cricket, especially with his batting prowess. However, it's undeniable that Gill will face fresh hurdles as he embraces the captain's mantle.  

“He's a quality player. He's a thoroughly nice person. He's got massive motivation and determination as an individual, which we've seen when playing for India. But like any new leader, he's starting from scratch, and he's going to be met with challenges along the way and we, as coaches, will just have to assist him along the way," Kirsten added.  

Gujarat Titans will open their IPL 2024 campaign against Mumbai Indians on March 24 at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad.
