'He's A Future Leader': WC-Winning Captain Doubts Jaiswal's Selection Over Shubman Gill

In a candid opinion, former England captain Eoin Morgan stated that if Indian team selection were up to him, he would have prioritised Shubman Gill’s selection over Yashasvi Jaiswal for the T20 World Cup as he sees Gill as one of the future leaders.

India’s 15-man squad selection for the impending T20 World Cup 2024 raised eyebrows due to a couple of surprising calls.

Firstly, Rinku Singh was ignored for the finisher role as Shivam Dube was promoted, citing team combination issues.

On the other hand, Shubman Gill, India’s regular opener alongside captain Rohit Sharma, lost his place in the main squad to Yashasvi Jaiswal, who bursted into the scene after his staggering performances in red ball cricket.

Instead, both Gill and Rinku were pushed to the travel reserves slots. However, Jaiswal’s selection over Gill didn’t sit well with former English captain Eoin Morgan.

While talking to Sky Sports, Eoin Morgan opined that the only thing he would change in the Indian’s side for the 2024 T20 World Cup is replacing Yashasvi Jaiswal with Shubman Gill.

Morgan explained that he has played with Gill in the past in IPL, and he understands the opener’s mindset as a leader.

"The only decision I probably would have had differently if I was selecting a squad was - I have would have had Shubman Gill over Yashasvi Jaiswal. Because I played alongside Shubman Gill. I know how he thinks. I know how he works," Morgan said.

The former captain essentially sees Shubman Gill a one of the future leaders of the Indian team and hence he feels the latter needs exposure at big events.

"For me, he is a future leader within that side and I think in big moments, you need the more leaders the better. Even if he is just sitting on the sideline, you need inspiration from here and there and everywhere," he added.

Notably, since Jaiswal bursted into the international cricket scene, Gill has been actively pushed at no.3, as widely seen during the five-game Test series against England.

But as far as T20 format is concerned, Shubman Gill is yet to get clarity over his actual role within the team.
